Chapter 1 - The Shattered Centerpiece

The wedding was perfect until the cake started falling.

A five-layer masterpiece of sugar flowers and white frosting tilted sideways in one horrifying second.

It crashed across the marble floor with a sickening splatter.

Gasps exploded through the reception hall.

Phones shot into the air to record the disaster.

Candles flickered in the sudden rush of movement.

The romantic music died mid-note.

The bride stood frozen and stared at what had been the centerpiece of her night.

It was now smashed into sweet ruin.

Frosting was everywhere.

Broken tiers lay scattered like debris.

Crushed sugar flowers painted the white tiles.

And right beside it stood a little boy.

He was still grinning from ear to ear.

Nearby, his mother barely reacted to the chaos.

She simply smirked and casually adjusted her diamond bracelet.

"Relax, he is just a kid," the woman said loudly.

Whispers spread instantly through the wealthy guests.

Sarah, the bride, stepped forward slowly.

Her face was highly controlled.

But she was burning underneath the white veil.

"You watched him do that," Sarah whispered.

The woman folded her arms and stood perfectly calm.

"You cannot punish a child for playing," she sneered.

The shock on the bride's face slowly faded away.

The hurt completely disappeared from her eyes.

Something much colder and darker took its place.

Sarah reached into her elegant bridal clutch.

She pulled out her phone and made one short phone call.

The smirking woman laughed softly.

"You are being incredibly dramatic over a cake," the woman mocked.

Seconds later, two uniformed police officers entered through the dessert area.

The entire room fell utterly silent again.

Every eye followed the heavy footsteps of the cops.

The woman's smug smile held on, but only barely.

"It was just an accident," the woman said quickly to the approaching officers.

The bride did not answer her.

Sarah only lifted one hand and pointed upward.

Above them hung a high-definition overhead security camera.

One officer immediately moved to the nearby security monitor on the wall.

He pressed the rewind button.

He played the footage from the last three minutes.

His expression tightened instantly.

This was no accident.

This was no innocent mistake.

He turned slowly toward the woman with a hand resting on his radio.

His calm voice was sharp enough to cut glass.

"Ma'am, do not move," the officer commanded.

Her arrogant smirk vanished in real time.

Guests stared openly with their phones held higher than ever.

The woman's breath caught in her throat.

The officer reached into the ruined cake frosting and pulled out a small, metallic device.

Its red light was blinking furiously as the countdown timer hit zero.
