Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum

A sharp, cruel voice whispered directly into my ear from the thick fog.
"Drop the weapon right now, Daniel," Rachel commanded softly.
I slowly lowered the stolen pistol and let it clatter harmlessly onto the wet concrete.
Rachel violently kicked the back of my knees, forcing me to fall heavily onto the hard ground.
She grabbed me by the collar and aggressively dragged me through the rusty side door of the warehouse.
The massive room was incredibly cold and smelled heavily of damp mold and old motor oil.
Sophie looked up, and her terrified eyes flooded with fresh, heartbreaking tears.
"Daddy!" she cried out, struggling weakly against the thick ropes tying her to the chair.
I tried to run toward her, but Rachel fired a warning shot directly into the floor by my feet.
"Do not take another step, or the next bullet goes into her fragile little head," Rachel threatened.
She pulled a thick stack of highly detailed legal documents from her designer leather jacket.
"Marcus failed to wire the money, which means we have to do this the incredibly hard way," she sneered.
She violently tossed a black pen and the legal papers directly onto the floor in front of me.
"These papers officially transfer your entire life insurance policy and total corporate ownership directly to me," she stated.
I looked at the documents, fully realizing this was her ultimate, twisted endgame.
"If I sign these, you will just kill us both anyway," I argued desperately.
Rachel smiled wickedly and pointed her heavy gun perfectly at Sophie's trembling chest.
"You have exactly ten seconds to sign the papers, or I will gladly prove you wrong," she counted down.
I scrambled quickly to my knees and desperately grabbed the black pen with shaking hands.
I rapidly scribbled my legal signature across every single page, completely surrendering my entire life's work.
I slid the signed papers across the dirty floor toward her expensive boots.
"Now let her go," I demanded, slowly standing up to shield my daughter.
Rachel picked up the documents and secured them tightly in her leather jacket.

She looked at me with a terrifyingly blank expression and raised her weapon again.
"I never actually promised to let either of you leave this building alive," she whispered.
