Chapter 2 - The Cold Cell

The concrete walls of the holding cell were freezing and completely silent.
I paced back and forth, entirely consumed by absolute panic regarding Sophie's safety.
Child Protective Services had taken my daughter to an undisclosed emergency foster location.
I knew Rachel had deliberately orchestrated this entire nightmare to punish me.
The heavy steel door suddenly echoed with a loud metallic click.
A tall man in a tailored black suit walked into the visitor area carrying a leather briefcase.
I rushed to the bars, assuming he was the defense attorney my brother had promised to send.
"Are you the lawyer?" I asked desperately.
The man smirked and slowly opened his expensive briefcase.
"I am an attorney, but I certainly do not work for you," he replied smoothly.
He handed a stack of official legal documents through the narrow gap in the metal bars.
"I represent Rachel, and I am here to serve you with a permanent restraining order."
I threw the papers onto the floor in pure frustration.
"She is a child abuser who belongs in a federal prison," I shouted angrily.
The lawyer laughed softly and adjusted his expensive silk tie.
"The police released her an hour ago due to lack of substantial evidence," he explained.
I felt all the blood rapidly drain from my face.
"That is impossible because she dragged my child across the kitchen floor," I argued.
He leaned incredibly close to the cold steel bars.
"Rachel is not just walking completely free today," he whispered maliciously.
"She secretly filed emergency adoption papers three months ago, and a judge officially granted her full custody this morning."
I grabbed the metal bars, feeling a sickening wave of pure terror wash over my body.
"You have no legal rights to Sophie anymore," the lawyer smiled.
He pulled a small digital tablet from his pocket and pressed a button.

The screen showed a live video feed of Rachel smiling wickedly while buckling a crying Sophie into a car seat.
"And they have a flight to catch in exactly two hours," he added coldly.
