Chapter 1 - The Shattered Promise

I held Sophie tightly against my chest as the police car drove away.
The flashing red and blue lights faded into the dark neighborhood.
I kissed my daughter's forehead and made a solemn vow.
I promised her that I would never leave her alone with that woman ever again.
Sophie buried her small, tear-stained face into my jacket.
She was shaking violently from the cold and the horrific trauma.
I turned around to carry her safely back inside our house.
A second police cruiser suddenly pulled into my driveway with its sirens blaring.
Two more officers stepped out of the vehicle with their hands resting heavily on their belts.
I assumed they were just here to take my official statement about the abuse.
Instead, the taller officer pulled out a pair of heavy metal handcuffs.
He looked at me with a completely cold and unforgiving expression.
"Daniel Evans, you are under arrest for severe domestic assault," the officer announced.
I stared at him in complete and utter disbelief.
"I was protecting my five-year-old daughter from a monster," I argued desperately.
The officer shook his head and unclipped the handcuffs.
"Rachel showed the other officers severe bruises on her neck and claimed you attacked her entirely unprovoked."
I tried to explain the situation, but they aggressively grabbed my arms.
"You cannot leave my daughter here alone in the cold," I begged frantically as they pulled my hands behind my back.
A woman in a neat grey suit stepped out of the shadows from behind the police car.
"She will not be alone," the strange woman stated flatly.
"I am with Child Protective Services, and we are taking the girl into emergency state custody."
Sophie screamed in absolute terror and tried to cling to my legs.
They mercilessly pried my crying daughter away and pushed me into the back of the police cruiser.
Through the glass, I watched my entire world completely shatter into pieces.
My phone suddenly lit up on the car seat before the officer could confiscate it.

The glowing screen displayed a brand new text message from Rachel.
"I warned you that you have no idea what you are dealing with, Daniel."
