Chapter 5 - The Inside Job

Marcus smiled coldly as he kept the heavy weapon aimed perfectly at my skull.

"You really should have paid more attention to our financial reports, Daniel," Marcus mocked smoothly.

He explained that he had secretly embezzled millions of dollars from our company over the last three years.

He hired Rachel to completely distract me and eventually ruin my reputation to cover his criminal tracks.

"She was supposed to slowly poison your career, but she got greedy and wanted a massive final payout," Marcus sighed.

I clenched my fists, completely consumed by an overwhelming wave of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Where is my daughter?" I demanded, entirely ignoring the deadly weapon pointed at me.

Marcus laughed and slowly stepped backward toward the heavy wooden doors of his office.

"Rachel is holding the girl at an abandoned shipping warehouse near the old docks," Marcus revealed carelessly.

He believed I was completely powerless and about to die anyway.

"I am going to shoot you and tell the police you broke into my house in a violent, drug-induced rage," he stated calmly.

Marcus tightened his finger aggressively around the trigger of the pistol.

I did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second.

I violently kicked the heavy mahogany desk directly into his legs with all my strength.

Marcus lost his balance and fired a silenced shot wildly into the ceiling plaster.

I lunged forward, aggressively tackling him to the expensive hardwood floor.

I punched him brutally across the jaw, instantly knocking the treacherous coward entirely unconscious.

I grabbed his dropped pistol and sprinted out of the luxurious mansion toward my car.

I drove like a complete madman toward the desolate, fog-covered industrial docks on the edge of the city.

I knew Rachel would not wait for the money if she felt even slightly threatened.

I parked a few blocks away from the massive, decaying warehouse and crept quietly through the dense fog.

I peered cautiously through a broken, dirty window on the ground floor.

I could clearly see Sophie sitting alone on a wooden chair in the very center of the massive room.

But as I raised the gun to break the glass, a cold metal barrel was violently pressed against the back of my neck.
