Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Showdown

The divorce hearing was a bloodbath.
Marcus sat at the defense table representing himself, because he couldn't afford a high-powered attorney. He looked exhausted, his suit hanging loosely off his frame.
My lawyer, Diane, systematically dismantled his life in front of the judge. She presented the evidence of the adultery, the embezzlement of marital funds, and the fraudulent insurance claims.
"Your Honor," Diane stated clearly. "Mr. Sterling systematically drained fifty thousand dollars from marital accounts to fund his infidelity. My client is requesting full sole custody of their infant son, primary ownership of the marital home, and immediate restitution of the stolen funds via the liquidation of Mr. Sterling's remaining retirement accounts."
Marcus stood up, desperate. "Your Honor, I have no income! If you take my retirement, I will be bankrupt!"
The judge, a stern woman with zero tolerance for infidelity, looked down at him over her glasses.

"Mr. Sterling," the judge said coldly. "You made a series of calculated, deceptive choices that endangered your pregnant wife and defrauded your family. You will sign over full physical and legal custody of the child to the mother. You are ordered to liquidate your 401k to repay the marital estate. And you will pay child support based on your previous earning capacity."
The gavel slammed down. It was absolute, undeniable victory.
