Chapter 3 - The Driveway Confrontation

When we pulled into my driveway, Marcus was standing on the lawn, staring furiously at the six black trash bags sitting by the curb. His arm was still in a sling.

He marched up to the car as I stepped out.

"What the hell is this, Sarah?!" he yelled. "You changed the locks? My name is on the deed to this house!"

"Actually, it's not," I replied smoothly, leaning against the car door. "My grandfather left me this house before we got married. You just pay the utility bills. Which, by the way, I have canceled in your name."

"You can't do this! I live here!"

"You live wherever Chloe lives now," I said, my voice dripping with venom. "I saw the fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer, Marcus. I know about the townhouse you bought her."

Marcus went pale. The blustering anger vanished, replaced by genuine panic. "Sarah, listen. That money was an investment..."

"Save it for the judge," I interrupted. Then I stepped closer to him, my eyes locked on his. "But before you leave, you are going to call Chloe. Right now. Tell her to bring my grandmother's emerald necklace back to this house within the hour, or I am calling the police and reporting it stolen."

"She didn't steal it! I gave it to her!"

May you like

"It wasn't yours to give," I snapped. "You have sixty minutes, Marcus. Or I press grand larceny charges."

He pulled out his phone with his good hand, his fingers trembling. He knew I wasn't bluffing.
