Chapter 2 - The Locks and the Ledger

They kept me overnight for observation. By the time I was discharged the next morning, Jessica was waiting in the lobby to drive me home.
"The locksmith is already done," Jessica said, handing me a shiny new brass key as I climbed into the passenger seat. "And I packed all of his clothes into black trash bags and left them in the driveway. But Sarah... you need to see what I found."
She handed me an iPad. It displayed our joint bank account.
"I pulled the statements while you were sleeping," Jessica explained, her voice tight with anger. "Look at the withdrawals over the last fourteen months."
I scrolled through the screen. Thousands of dollars had been systematically drained. High-end restaurants, boutique maternity stores, and a massive wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars labeled "Down Payment."
"He bought her a house," I whispered, the realization making me nauseous. "He used the savings we put aside for our son’s college fund to buy a house for his mistress."
"Not just a mistress," Jessica corrected gently. "Your sister. But there's more. Remember the hospital intake form you saw? Where she listed him as her husband?"
"Yes."

A slow, dangerous smile crept across my face. Marcus thought he could string me along until I gave birth, secure his assets, and walk away clean. He had no idea he had just handed me the match to burn his entire life down.
