Chapter 5 - The Premature Storm

The stress of the betrayal took a physical toll faster than I anticipated.
Three weeks after the hospital incident, at barely thirty-five weeks pregnant, I woke up in the middle of the night to a sharp, tearing pain in my lower abdomen. My water had broken.
I called Jessica, and we rushed to the hospital.
"Your blood pressure is spiking dangerously high," the triage nurse said, hooking me up to the fetal monitors. "We can't stop the labor. The baby is coming today."
I was terrified. I was in excruciating pain, sweating, and gripping the bedrails, but the only thing I cared about was the tiny heartbeat echoing rapidly on the monitor.
Suddenly, the delivery room door swung open.
Marcus stood there, holding a cheap bouquet of flowers. "I got a call from the emergency contact registry. I'm here."
I felt my heart rate skyrocket. The monitors began to beep frantically.
"Get him out," I gasped, pointing a shaking finger at him.
"Sarah, I'm the father! I have a right to be here!" Marcus argued, trying to push past the nurse.
"You lost that right when you put your mistress in a hospital bed!" I screamed.

The attending doctor stepped right into Marcus’s chest. "Sir, the patient’s blood pressure is critical. You are a danger to her health. If you do not leave this room immediately, I will have you arrested for trespassing."
Two security guards appeared in the hallway. Marcus looked at the guards, looked at me, and finally backed away, throwing the flowers into the trash can as he left.
