Chapter 4 - The Family Implosion

An hour later, Chloe’s car pulled up to the curb. She didn't get out. She just rolled down the window and tossed a small velvet box onto the grass, peeling away before I could even walk down the driveway.
I picked up the box. The emerald was safe.
But I wasn't done with Chloe. If she thought she could steal my husband, wear my family heirlooms, and hide behind Marcus, she was dead wrong.
I walked inside, sat at the kitchen table, and opened my laptop. I composed an email to my parents, my aunts, my uncles, and every extended family member in our directory.
I attached a photo of the hospital intake form where Chloe had listed Marcus as her husband. I attached a screenshot of the drained bank accounts. And I wrote a simple, three-line message.
Chloe and Marcus have been having an affair for over a year. She is currently pregnant with his child. They funded their secret life by draining my son's college fund. I will no longer be attending Thanksgiving.
I hit send.

Within ten minutes, my phone exploded. My mother called, hysterical, refusing to believe it until I told her to drive to the townhouse Marcus had bought.
By nightfall, the family had effectively disowned Chloe. My father, a stern, no-nonsense military veteran, drove to her townhouse, demanded his spare house key back, and told her to lose his number. Chloe's illusion of a happy, blended, secret family had shattered upon contact with the real world.
