Chapter 9 - The Race for Survival

Vincenzo fired blindly through the thick wooden door.
Bullets splintered the frame as Dominic and Norah sprinted down the hall.
Vincenzo's men outside heard the gunshots and began kicking down the front doors.
The mansion was officially a war zone.
Dominic dragged Norah into the library.
He pushed a massive bookcase out of the way to reveal a dumbwaiter shaft.
He told Norah to climb inside and ride it down to the garage.
Norah refused to leave him behind to die.
Dominic kissed her fiercely on the mouth.
It was brief, desperate, and tasted like gunpowder.
He told her to start the armored Mercedes in the garage and wait for him.
He shoved her into the small wooden box and cut the brake line.
Norah plummeted down the dark shaft at terrifying speed.
She crashed into the basement level with a bone-jarring thud.
She crawled out into the cavernous underground garage.
The armored Mercedes sat in the corner.
The keys were dangling in the ignition.
Norah jumped into the driver's seat and started the engine.
She heard heavy footsteps echoing down the concrete ramp.
Three of Vincenzo's men ran into the garage with assault rifles.
Norah did not hesitate.
She slammed her foot on the gas pedal.
The heavy German engine roared to life.
She rammed the two-ton vehicle directly into the men.
They scattered like bowling pins as she smashed through the wooden garage doors.
She spun the car around in the muddy driveway.
Dominic burst out of the kitchen exit holding his bleeding arm.
He dove into the passenger seat as bullets rained down on the car.
Norah floored the accelerator and drove straight toward the iron gates.
Vincenzo stood on the front porch with his face red and blistered.
He screamed at his men to shoot out the tires.
Norah ducked as the back window shattered into a thousand pieces.
She smashed through the iron gates and fishtailed onto the wet mountain road.

They were out.
They were finally free.
