Chapter 1 - The Nurse Who Would Not Flinch

Blood and money could buy almost anything.

A private island.

A judge willing to forget what he had seen.

A senator willing to remember exactly who had funded his first campaign.

A stone fortress hidden behind iron gates in the upstate hills.

What they could not buy was peace inside the Moretti house.

At eighty years old, Salvatore Moretti had become a ghost who somehow still ruled the living.

A massive stroke had taken most of the movement from his right side.

It twisted clear speech into broken sounds.

It had not softened him.

The staff feared him.

His own son avoided being alone with him.

Then Norah Gallagher arrived wearing twenty-dollar nursing shoes and blue scrubs.

She had no idea that one word would change the family forever.

She drove up the long curved driveway in the pouring rain.

Dominic Moretti met her in the foyer.

He was tall, dark-haired, and radiated a cold stillness.

He warned her that his father went through nurses quickly.

Norah simply stated she was not paid to like her patients.

She met Salvatore in a suffocating room on the second floor.

He threw a silver water pitcher at her head.

Norah calmly wiped the water from her shoulder and took his blood pressure.

For fourteen days, Salvatore tested every boundary she had.

He knocked tablets from her hand.

He spat at the maid.

Norah stood her ground and demanded respect.

Dominic watched their silent war from the shadows.

Then came the dinner that changed everything.

Salvatore spilled pasta sauce on his robe due to his tremors.

Dominic mocked him.

Salvatore flew into a violent rage and knocked his spoon away.

Norah lost her patience completely.

She slammed the medication cup down.

She spoke the first Italian word her grandmother had taught her.

Basta.

Absolute silence fell over the dining room.

Salvatore stared at Norah as if seeing a ghost.

He reached out with a trembling hand.

He touched the small silver pendant at her throat.

He formed a complete, recognizable word for the first time in months.

Famiglia.

Dominic immediately demanded to know where Norah got the necklace.

Norah told him her grandmother Rose Gallagher gave it to her.

Salvatore began to weep.

Dominic looked at Norah with genuine terror in his eyes.

Rose was not your grandmother's real name.

Dominic stepped closer to her in the silent room.

May you like

Her name was Rosa Bellandi.

And she was the woman who stole ten million dollars from the Chicago outfit.
