Chapter 3 - Blood in the Dark

Glass rained down across the expensive Persian rug.
Dominic tackled Norah to the floor.
Gunfire erupted from the tree line outside the window.
Bullets chewed through the mahogany desk above them.
Norah covered her ears to block out the deafening noise.
Dominic pulled a heavy black pistol from his ankle holster.
He grabbed Norah by the collar of her scrubs.
He told her to stay low and move toward the hallway.
They crawled over shattered glass in the pitch black.
Norah realized her hands were slick with blood.
Dominic had taken a piece of shrapnel to his left shoulder.
He ignored the wound and kicked the study door open.
The hallway was filled with the acrid smell of gunpowder.
Frank the bodyguard was already running toward them with a tactical rifle.
Frank shouted that the perimeter had been breached by at least six men.
Dominic ordered Frank to secure the second floor and protect his father.
Norah remembered Salvatore was helpless in his wheelchair.
She ignored Dominic's orders to stay hidden.
She sprinted up the sweeping staircase in the dark.
A man in a black mask stepped out from the shadows of the landing.
He raised a suppressed weapon directly at Norah's chest.
He grabbed the silver pendant around her neck.
He told her in a thick Russian accent that she was coming with him.
Norah reached into her scrub pocket.
She pulled out a medical penlight and shined the blinding beam straight into his eyes.
The man stumbled backward in surprise.
Norah shoved him hard down the marble stairs.
He crashed into Dominic at the bottom.
Dominic put a bullet through the man's chest.
Norah ran into Salvatore's bedroom.
