Chapter 5 - The Uncle's Shadow
Norah stared at the dead maid on the bunker floor.
Dominic lowered his weapon and looked at his father in shock.
He asked his father if he meant Uncle Vincenzo.
Salvatore gave a single sharp nod.
Dominic paced the small room with furious energy.
Vincenzo was supposed to be running the family casinos in Las Vegas.
He had not set foot in New York for ten years.
Norah checked the syringe Elena had dropped.
It was filled with a lethal dose of potassium chloride.
It would have looked exactly like a secondary heart attack.
Dominic ran his hands through his dark hair.
He realized his uncle was trying to wipe out the direct bloodline to take over the empire.
Norah bandaged Dominic's shoulder using supplies from her medical bag.
She asked why Vincenzo would attack tonight of all nights.
Dominic looked at the silver locket resting on Norah's chest.
Because the rumors of Rosa Bellandi's granddaughter surfacing must have reached him.
Vincenzo wanted the ledger to blackmail the Chicago bosses and solidify his power.
Dominic carried his father back up the hidden stairs.
They relocated to a secure panic room behind the main library.
Norah made sure Salvatore's vitals were stable.
The old man grabbed Norah's hand.
He tapped a specific rhythm against her palm.
It was Morse code.
Norah had learned it from her grandfather in the military.
She deciphered the taps one by one.
The message spelled out the words locked room.
Norah looked at Dominic.
She asked what was inside the locked room at the end of the east wing.
Dominic tensed up immediately.
He told her that room had been sealed since the day Rosa disappeared.
Norah stood up.
She said they needed to open it right now.
Dominic shook his head.
He warned her that some doors should never be opened.
Frank suddenly burst into the panic room.
