Chapter 2 - The Sins of the Grandmother

Norah felt the air leave her lungs.

She stared at the weeping old man and his terrified son.

She told Dominic he was out of his mind.

Her grandmother was a sweet woman who baked bread and died of pneumonia.

Dominic reached out and grabbed her wrist.

He dragged her out of the dining room and into his private study.

He locked the heavy oak door behind them.

He poured a glass of whiskey with shaking hands.

Rosa Bellandi was not a baker.

She was the chief accountant for a rival crime family.

She disappeared twenty-six years ago with a ledger that could put two dozen men in federal prison.

Norah shook her head in disbelief.

She touched the silver pendant resting against her collarbone.

Dominic told her that pendant was the key to a safety deposit box.

The Chicago outfit had been searching for that necklace for over two decades.

Norah backed away toward the door.

She said she was quitting right now and leaving this crazy house.

Dominic blocked her path.

He told her that the moment she drove through those gates, she was a dead woman.

The security cameras had already scanned her face.

His father's enemies had eyes inside the local police department.

Norah demanded to know why Salvatore cried when he saw her.

Dominic looked down at the floor.

Because my father is the man who was ordered to execute Rosa Bellandi.

Norah felt her heart shatter into pieces.

He spared her life on the condition she vanish forever.

Dominic looked up with a grim expression.

But if you are here, it means the people who want that ledger have finally found you.

A sudden explosion shattered the glass of the study window.

The lights in the mansion instantly went entirely dark.
