Chapter 7 - The Dark Waters
Maxwell violently spun the steering wheel, and the speedboat shot out from beneath the restaurant into the open ocean.
A terrifying hail of heavy bullets tore violently into the dark water just inches behind the roaring motor.
Sarah curled tightly into a small ball on the floorboards, gripping the golden folder fiercely against her chest.
The freezing night wind whipped her ruined navy gown aggressively around her bruised and battered legs.
She slowly pulled herself up into the leather passenger seat once the dangerous sounds of gunfire finally faded away.
The city lights rapidly became a distant, blurry glow as they sped dangerously fast into the pitch-black sea.
Sarah stared at the stern profile of the billionaire, her mind racing with a thousand unanswered questions.
"Why are you risking your own life to help me?" Sarah asked loudly over the roaring sound of the massive engine.
Maxwell kept his eyes firmly fixed on the dark horizon, his expression completely unreadable in the moonlight.
"I made a sacred vow to your father many years ago that I would watch over you from the shadows," he confessed quietly.
Before Sarah could fully process this shocking emotional revelation, the powerful boat engine suddenly sputtered violently.
The heavy machine choked loudly on its own exhaust, shuddering wildly before dying completely in the water.
They were suddenly entirely stranded in the dead center of the freezing, pitch-black ocean with absolutely no power.
Maxwell frantically punched the ignition button, cursing loudly as he checked the illuminated digital fuel gauge on the dashboard.
The indicator showed they had a completely full tank, but absolutely no fuel was reaching the engine at all.
"The main fuel line has been deliberately severed," Maxwell growled, slamming his fist angrily against the steering wheel.
