Chapter 5 - The Resurrected Betrayer

David’s request felt like a physical knife twisting deeply into Sarah’s already broken heart.

She scrambled backward across the debris-covered floor, clutching the golden folder tightly against her chest like a protective shield.

"You are supposed to be dead," Sarah choked out, tears of sheer disbelief finally spilling hotly down her cheeks.

David sighed softly, running a hand through his dark hair as if dealing with an annoying child.

"I had to fake my death to safely escape the incredibly dangerous enemies your father made," David explained in a smooth, convincing tone.

He took another slow step toward her, his heavily armed mercenaries instantly raising their rifles to cover his advance.

"I am here to protect you, Sarah, but I desperately need those Vanguard estate documents to secure our future," he pleaded gently.

Suddenly, a loud, mocking round of applause broke the tense silence from the back of the ruined dining room.

Maxwell stood up slowly, brushing a thick layer of white plaster dust off his expensive, custom-tailored suit.

"That is a truly beautiful story, David, but we both know it is a complete lie," the billionaire said with a cruel smirk.

Maxwell turned his piercing gaze toward Sarah, fully exposing the dark truth of her resurrected lover.

"He faked his death because he was caught embezzling funds for a rival corporate syndicate, the exact same people who poisoned your father."

Sarah gasped loudly, looking back at David’s face to see if he would aggressively deny the horrifying accusation.

Instead, David’s gentle smile instantly vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, cold-blooded malice.

He did not deny a single word of Maxwell’s brutal allegation, proving that he was never truly on her side.

"Grab the girl and shoot anyone who tries to interfere," David commanded his men with terrifying apathy.

Two massive mercenaries immediately lunged forward, grabbing Sarah roughly by her arms and trying to rip the folder away.

Sarah fought back fiercely, kicking and screaming with every ounce of strength left in her tired body.

Just as they were about to drag her away, Maxwell suddenly kicked a silver canister straight across the marble floor.

It spun rapidly toward David’s boots and instantly detonated in a blinding, painful flash of pure white light.
