Chapter 6 - The Mother-in-Law's Clutches

Beatriz cocked the shotgun, the metallic clack echoing loudly in the narrow alley.
"Get in the trunk, Ana," Beatriz ordered, her face completely calm and emotionless.
"You are insane, all of you are absolute psychopaths," I sobbed, pressing my back against the wet bricks.
"We are surviving, Ana," she corrected me, stepping a few paces closer.
"Diego owes the cartel ten million dollars, and if we do not deliver your heart tonight, they will execute my entire family."
"I am not a sacrifice for your criminal debts," I screamed in defiance.
"You are whatever I say you are," she snarled, raising the barrel toward my knees.
She was going to cripple me just to make sure I could not run again.
Suddenly, the deafening blare of a police siren flooded the alleyway with flashing red and blue lights.
Beatriz cursed under her breath, dropping the shotgun and kicking it under a nearby dumpster.
A police officer stepped out of his cruiser, shining a flashlight directly into our faces.
"Is there a problem here, ladies?" the officer asked sternly.
"Officer, please help me, this woman is trying to murder me and harvest my organs!" I cried, running toward him.
Beatriz put on a flawless mask of maternal concern.
"Officer, forgive my daughter-in-law, she is having a severe schizophrenic episode and escaped from the hospital," Beatriz lied smoothly.
The officer looked at my bare feet, my oversized janitor uniform, and my wild hair.
He pulled a pair of heavy metal handcuffs from his utility belt.
"Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back," he ordered me.
"No, you do not understand, check my pockets, I have the morgue keycard!" I pleaded frantically.
The officer grabbed my wrists roughly, completely ignoring my tears.

He leaned in close to my ear as he clicked the cold metal cuffs shut.
"Dr. Salgado sends his regards," the corrupt officer whispered.
