Chapter 3 - The Basement Truth

I thrashed blindly in the darkness, ready to fight for my life.
"Stop screaming, it is me," a familiar voice whispered harshly.
I blinked through the gloom and saw Elena, the nurse who had warned me, clutching her bleeding side.
"Elena, what happened to you?" I gasped, helping her lean against a concrete pillar.
"Salgado figured out I gave you the uniform," she choked out, her face pale and sweaty.
She pressed a small silver keycard and a burner phone into my bloody palm.
"This accesses the underground morgue, you have to hide there until the morning shift arrives."
"Why are they doing this to me?" I cried quietly.
"You have the golden blood type, Ana," she explained weakly.
"Rh-null, the rarest blood in the world, making your organs compatible with almost any billionaire on the black market."
Diego did not marry me out of love, he married me for inventory.
Elena slumped against the wall, her breathing shallow and ragged.
"Go, now," she commanded before her eyes rolled back and she passed out completely.
I left her in the shadows, swiping the keycard at the heavy steel doors of the hospital morgue.
The door hissed open, revealing rows of gleaming stainless steel tables and a freezing, sterile smell.
I hid in the darkest corner of the room, crouching behind a row of empty body bags.
The heavy metal door hissed open again.
Footsteps echoed across the tile floor, slow and deliberate.
I held my breath, praying to God I was invisible in the dark.
The footsteps stopped right beside the cart I was hiding behind.

A hand reached down and grabbed a fistful of my hair, yanking me up into the harsh fluorescent light.
It was Diego, holding a loaded pistol perfectly aimed at my chest.
