Chapter 5 - The Sister-in-Law's Trap

Fernanda locked the taxi doors with a sharp electronic click.

"Did you really think you could outrun us, Ana?" she mocked, gripping the syringe tightly.

I raised the gun I had stolen from Diego and pointed it directly at her face.

"Unlock the doors right now, Fernanda, or I swear I will shoot," I yelled.

She did not even flinch.

"The safety is on, you stupid girl," she laughed, plunging the needle toward my thigh.

I panicked, realizing she was right about the gun, and threw it hard against the passenger window.

The glass did not break, but the distraction gave me a split second to react.

I grabbed her wrist with both hands, fighting desperately to keep the needle away from my skin.

She stepped on the gas pedal, sending the taxi speeding recklessly down the slick, rain-soaked avenue.

"You owe this family your life," Fernanda screamed, wrestling with me in the front seat.

"We gave you a home, we gave you a husband, and now you have to pay the debt."

"I am not dying for your greed!" I screamed back.

I reached over the center console and yanked the steering wheel violently to the right.

The taxi spun completely out of control on the wet asphalt.

We crashed violently into a row of parked cars, the airbags deploying with a deafening explosion.

The impact shattered the passenger window, leaving Fernanda unconscious against the steering wheel.

I kicked the broken door open and crawled out into the freezing rain, my body covered in glass and bruises.

I limped down an empty alleyway, desperate to find a police station or a public phone.

A dark sedan suddenly peeled around the corner, its headlights pinning me against a brick wall.

My mother-in-law, Beatriz, stepped out of the driver's seat holding a double-barreled shotgun.
