Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

My husband stared at me with an expression completely devoid of humanity.

"You always had to make things difficult, Ana," Diego sighed, cocking the gun.

"How long?" I whispered, my voice trembling with pure rage.

"How long have you been planning to murder me?"

Diego chuckled softly, as if I had just asked a naive question.

"Since the day we met at that coffee shop three years ago," he confessed smoothly.

"My mother selected you from a medical database she hacked into."

"Every date, every kiss, our wedding day, it was all just preparation for tonight."

A sickening wave of betrayal washed over me, replacing my fear with unadulterated fury.

"You are a monster," I spat at him.

"I am a businessman, and your heart is worth twenty million dollars," he replied coldly.

He reached out to grab my arm, fully intending to drag me back to the operating room.

As he lunged forward, my hand desperately grabbed the nearest object on the stainless steel tray next to me.

My fingers wrapped around the handle of a heavy bone saw.

I swung it upward with every ounce of strength I had, slicing deep into Diego's forearm.

He screamed in agony, dropping the gun as blood sprayed across the pristine white floor.

I snatched the pistol from the ground and sprinted toward the emergency exit.

I pushed through the crash bars and ran out into the pouring rain.

The neon lights of the city blurred through my tears as I hailed a passing yellow taxi.

I threw myself into the backseat, gasping for air.

"Just drive, please get me out of here," I begged the driver.

The driver slowly turned around, pulling a syringe filled with clear liquid from her pocket.

It was my sister-in-law, Fernanda, smiling with a terrifying, hollow gaze.
