Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Motive

The sickening truth washed over me like a bucket of ice water.
Warren and Elaine didn't just want Maisie out of the way for a single morning.
If Maisie died, or if I went to prison for abusing her, the multimillion-dollar trust would legally revert to my father.
They were willing to murder my innocent baby and frame me just to get their hands on that money.
"We have to get to the hospital right now," Lucas yelled, hauling Tessa to her feet.
We practically flew down the highway, praying to God we weren't too late.
I sprinted through the automatic hospital doors, ignoring the angry protests of the night staff.
When we reached the pediatric intensive care unit, my heart shattered into a million pieces.
Maisie's hospital bed was completely empty, the monitors switched off and the blankets neatly folded.
I grabbed the nearest nurse by the shoulders, demanding to know where my daughter was.
"Her grandparents showed us the temporary custody order from CPS," the frightened nurse stammered.
"They checked her out twenty minutes ago against medical advice," she added nervously.

I dropped to my knees, feeling the world spin wildly out of control.
"They requested an ambulance transport to the private airfield," the nurse confessed quietly.
