Chapter 2 - The Setup

The ride to the hospital was a blur of frantic compressions and terrifying medical jargon.

By the time we crashed through the emergency room doors, a team of doctors whisked Maisie away from me.

I collapsed into a plastic waiting room chair, my hands still stained with the dirt from the dumpster.

An hour later, Lucas finally rushed into the waiting area, looking completely exhausted.

"The police let me go, but your parents are spinning a massive web of lies," he warned me.

Before I could process his words, two uniformed officers marched into the waiting room.

They didn't look sympathetic at all.

"Are you the mother of Maisie?" the taller officer asked with a stern voice.

I nodded eagerly, desperate for any news about my baby.

"Your father provided us with security footage from the store's hallway," the officer stated coldly.

"It shows you carrying a heavily sedated child out the back door at two in the morning," he continued.

My jaw dropped in absolute horror.

Warren had manipulated the camera angles to frame me.

"That's a lie, they threw her away so she wouldn't ruin a beauty pageant!" I screamed frantically.

The officer reached for his belt and unclipped a pair of heavy metal handcuffs.

"You have the right to remain silent," he said, forcing my arms violently behind my back.
