Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Evidence

We had to get Elaine away from my daughter before she finished what she started.

Lucas pulled me into a deserted hospital stairwell to formulate a desperate plan.

"Tessa said your mother threw the pill bottle in the dumpster with Maisie," he reminded me.

If we could find that bottle, we could prove they administered the drugs and get their fingerprints tested.

We drove back to Holloway Home & Tool under the cover of darkness.

The crime scene tape had already been removed by the careless local police.

I climbed back into the foul-smelling dumpster, using my phone's flashlight to search through the rotting garbage.

My hands dug through wet coffee grounds and torn cardboard boxes.

Finally, my fingers brushed against a small, cylindrical plastic container hidden under a rotting apple.

I pulled it out triumphantly, wiping away the grime to read the label.

This was the proof we needed to clear my name and lock my parents away forever.

But as the beam of my flashlight hit the white sticker, my heart completely stopped.

The prescription wasn't in Warren's name, and it wasn't in Elaine's name either.

The label clearly displayed the name of the patient the heavy sedatives belonged to.

It read: Lucas Mercer.
