Chapter 6 - The Politician's Shadow

I stared at the glowing screen with a murderous rage burning in my chest.
My mother had died in a supposed random robbery when I was exactly six years old.
The ledger proved Silas had hired the gunmen to eliminate her because she knew about his early betrayals.
I had spent my entire life trusting the very man who destroyed my childhood.
I closed the laptop abruptly and placed the flash drive deep in my pocket.
Maria walked over and placed a warm, comforting hand on my trembling shoulder.
"We can destroy him legally with this evidence," she whispered gently.
"I am not going to hand this over to the police," I replied with dead, empty eyes.
"I am going to rip his heart out with my bare hands."
I walked over to the heavy steel door of the loft.
"Lock this door behind me and do not open it for absolutely anyone."
I stepped out into the hallway to make a secure satellite call to my remaining loyal captains.
I paced the dark corridor for five minutes, giving brutal orders to hunt down Silas's men.
I ended the call and knocked on the heavy metal door.
There was no answer from inside the loft.
I knocked harder, calling Maria's name loudly through the steel.
Absolute, terrifying silence greeted me.
I kicked the door open with a sudden surge of blinding panic.
The loft was completely empty.

The window leading to the rusted fire escape was shattered into a thousand pieces.
A single bloody handprint stained the broken glass on the window sill.
