Chapter 4 - The Highway Struggle

Elias kept his eyes on the wet road while keeping the gun aimed at my temple.

"I am truly sorry, Daniel," he whispered with a trembling voice.

"Silas promised me two million dollars and a safe flight to Europe."

I looked at the man who had driven me safely through this dangerous city for ten years.

"You will never make it to the airport," I said with dead, cold eyes.

I knew better than to ever negotiate with a traitor.

I waited for the exact moment the speeding sedan hit a deep puddle on the curving highway.

The car hydroplaned for a fraction of a second.

I lunged violently across the center console.

I grabbed the hot barrel of the revolver and shoved it brutally upward.

The gun fired, blowing a massive hole through the roof of the car.

Elias swung his elbow into my jaw with devastating force.

I tasted fresh blood, but I absolutely refused to let go of the weapon.

I punched him directly in the throat with my free hand.

Elias gasped for air, and his grip on the steering wheel slipped entirely.

The heavy sedan spun wildly out of control across the slippery asphalt.

We crashed violently into the steel guardrail on the edge of the highway.

The airbags deployed with a deafening explosion of white powder.

I pushed the deflated bag away and looked over at the driver's seat.

Elias was slumped against the shattered window with his neck bent at a fatal angle.

I turned around frantically to check the back seat.

Maria was clutching Sofia fiercely against her chest, shivering but thankfully unhurt.

I grabbed Elias's burner phone from his jacket pocket before kicking my jammed door open.

I opened the recent messages and read the final instruction Silas had sent him.

"Bring the child to the harbor alive, but put a bullet in the mother."

I looked at Maria, realizing she was the actual target of this entire war.
