Chapter 5 - The Safe House

We abandoned the wrecked sedan on the edge of the dark highway.

I hotwired an old pickup truck parked behind a closed diner a mile down the road.

I drove us deep into the forgotten industrial district of Brooklyn.

I stopped at an abandoned textile warehouse that I owned under a fake shell corporation.

I unlocked the rusted metal door and led them up to a dusty loft apartment.

It was a secret safe house that not even my Uncle Silas knew existed.

I took off my ruined suit jacket and sat heavily on a broken wooden chair.

My left arm was bleeding badly from a deep gash I received during the car crash.

Maria found a dusty first aid kit in the rusty bathroom cabinet.

She knelt in front of me and began cleaning the wound with steady, gentle hands.

"Why does Silas want you dead?" I asked her quietly in the dim light.

Maria kept her eyes perfectly focused on my bleeding arm.

"David didn't just find out about Vincent Russo," she explained softly.

"He found a digital ledger hidden deep in the syndicate's main server."

"The ledger proves that Silas has been stealing from you for a decade."

I felt a sickening, freezing knot form in my stomach.

"Where is the ledger right now?" I demanded.

Maria pointed to the small, worn stuffed bear that Sofia was hugging to her chest in the corner.

"I sewed the flash drive inside the bear before we ran away from our old apartment," she said.

I walked over to the sleeping child and carefully cut the fabric of the toy.

I pulled out a small, heavily encrypted black flash drive.

I plugged it into the secure laptop hidden under the floorboards of the loft.

The files loaded on the screen, revealing a conspiracy far worse than stolen money.

The final document proved that Silas was the one who had arranged my mother's murder twenty-eight years ago.
