Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I drove a stolen car like an absolute madman until we reached the towering stone cathedral.

I told Maria to stay securely in the vehicle while I finished this bloody war once and for all.

I kicked the heavy oak doors of the church open and stepped into the dimly lit sanctuary.

Three of Silas's heavily armed mercenaries were waiting near the beautiful main altar.

I did not give them a single second to raise their deadly weapons.

I shot all three men perfectly in the head, their bodies collapsing heavily onto the marble floor.

I reloaded my weapon and scanned the dark shadows of the silent, echoing church.

Sofia was sitting safely on the front pew, clutching her ruined stuffed bear.

She looked up and smiled brightly when she saw me walking rapidly toward her.

Maria ran through the open doors behind me and scooped her daughter into a desperate, weeping embrace.

I dropped my empty gun to the floor, feeling an overwhelming wave of absolute relief.

I had survived the brutal betrayal, destroyed the assassins, and finally saved my new family.

We turned around to walk out of the church and start a brand new life together far away from New York.

Suddenly, Sofia pointed her tiny finger toward the dark shadows near the confession booths.

"Look Mommy, Daddy finally woke up from being cold," the little girl said happily.

I froze completely, my blood turning to absolute ice in my veins.

A tall, broad-shouldered man slowly stepped out into the flickering candlelight of the church.

It was David, Maria's supposedly dead husband.

He was holding a golden FBI Director badge in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other.

He smiled coldly at me and said, "Thank you for keeping my bait alive, Daniel."
