Chapter 9 - The Confession
Detective Vance leaned against the wall, clutching his bleeding side as the distant sounds of police sirens finally pierced the night.
"Harris had a team of hired mercenaries waiting to sweep the VIP wing," Vance explained, breathing heavily.
"We apprehended the fake pregnant woman, Mia, at the service elevator trying to escape with a bag of hospital cash."
He told me that Mia had immediately flipped on her employers to avoid a life sentence in federal prison.
She confessed on a recorded line that Dr. Harris had orchestrated the multi-million dollar fraud.
Ethan had discovered the missing funds during a routine corporate audit of the hospital's supplier accounts.
Harris tried to buy Ethan's silence with the bag of cash, and when Ethan refused, Harris ordered the brake lines cut.
Just as Vance finished explaining, the emergency backup lights flickered on, casting a dim, red glow across the room.
"Dr. Harris is currently barricaded in the electrical room, completely surrounded by federal agents," Vance said with a tired smile.
"It is finally over, Doctor."
I looked down at Ethan, continuing to squeeze the manual breathing bag with tears of absolute relief streaming down my face.
Suddenly, Ethan's eyelids fluttered, and his fingers weakly grasped the edge of my medical scrub top.
He slowly opened his eyes, squinting against the harsh red emergency lights.
He couldn't speak around the breathing tube, but he looked at me with an expression of pure, overwhelming love.
I pressed my forehead gently against his, whispering that everything was going to be perfectly fine.
We had survived the absolute worst night of our lives, and the criminals who tried to tear us apart were going to prison forever.

But as I looked up to thank Detective Vance, I noticed something horrifying on his police radio.
The radio buzzed statically, and a frantic voice screamed, "Officer down in the electrical room, the suspect has escaped through the maintenance tunnels!"
