Chapter 7 - The Hunt Begins

I refused to leave Ethan's side until the new surgical team successfully closed his wounds.

Once he was stable, I immediately initiated a highly classified VIP hospital protocol.

I transferred Ethan to a private, secure recovery room under the fake alias of John Doe to hide him from the hospital registry.

I posted two armed hospital security guards directly outside his door with strict orders to admit absolutely no one.

Sitting beside his bed, I finally pulled the encrypted flash drive from my pocket.

I used my phone to email the entire database of fraudulent billing records to Detective Vance and the local FBI field office.

I was not going to let these monsters get away with trying to murder the man I loved.

Suddenly, my cell phone vibrated violently against the plastic bedside table.

It was an incoming video call from an anonymous, blocked caller ID.

I answered it, and Dr. Harris's smug, arrogant face filled the bright screen.

"You are a very talented surgeon, Claire, but you are a terrible chess player," Harris said smoothly.

He shifted the camera, revealing that he was standing in the dimly lit basement of the hospital's main electrical grid.

"You sent the files, which ruins my career, but I am not going to spend the rest of my life in a federal prison."

He reached out and placed his hand on the massive lever controlling the backup emergency generators.

"I disabled the primary power grid five minutes ago, and now, I am turning off the hospital's life support systems."

Before I could beg him to stop, Harris violently pulled the heavy steel lever downward.

The entire hospital instantly plunged into pitch-black darkness.

Every single life-saving machine in the building shut down at once, including the ventilator breathing for my husband.
