Chapter 4 - The Corporate Web

I froze completely as the cold steel of the weapon pressed harder against my spine.

"Mia?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper in the silent, empty doctor's lounge.

"Step away from the keyboard and put your hands where I can see them," she ordered, dropping the act of the weeping, helpless mother.

Her voice was now sharp, calculated, and devoid of any previous emotion.

I slowly raised my hands and turned around to face the woman claiming to be my husband's pregnant mistress.

She wasn't holding a gun, but rather a heavy steel surgical scalpel stolen from one of the trauma carts.

"You aren't pregnant, are you?" I asked, noticing how effortlessly she moved despite her supposedly swollen belly.

Mia smirked, sliding her free hand under her shirt and pulling out a silicone maternity prosthetic, letting it drop to the floor.

"Your husband was incredibly close to exposing our entire operation to the federal government," Mia sneered.

She explained that she was a hired corporate fixer brought in to destroy Ethan's reputation in case they couldn't kill him.

"The cash in his trunk, the gun, the fake marriage certificate, it was all planted to frame him as a dirty, cheating criminal."

Anger finally overpowered my fear, and I tightened my fists.

"Who hired you to destroy my life?" I demanded, taking a slow step toward her.

"The same person who is currently operating on your husband's brain," she smiled maliciously.

My heart plummeted into my stomach as I remembered who the on-call neurosurgeon was tonight.

It was Dr. Harris, my closest medical mentor and the chief of surgery at the hospital.

"If you don't give me that flash drive right now, Dr. Harris is going to make sure Ethan has a fatal surgical complication," Mia threatened.

She lunged forward to grab the small black device from the computer port.

I grabbed a heavy medical textbook from the desk and swung it as hard as I could directly at her face.
