Chapter 6 - The Code Blue

A massive geyser of bright crimson blood sprayed across Dr. Harris's sterile surgical gown.
The heart monitor instantly erupted into a frantic, chaotic symphony of blaring alarms.
"Code blue, patient is bleeding out!" one of the young surgical residents screamed in pure panic.
Dr. Harris simply stepped backward, throwing his hands up in a theatrical display of false helplessness.
"I need clamps now, the vessel completely ruptured!" Harris yelled, deliberately acting incompetent to secure Ethan's death.
I didn't waste another second screaming through the useless intercom.
I sprinted down the stairwell, kicked open the sterile operating room doors, and rushed directly to the table without scrubbing in.
"Get out of my way!" I roared, physically shoving Dr. Harris so hard he crashed into a tray of surgical tools.
I plunged my bare, unsterilized hands directly into my husband's hot, pooling abdominal cavity.
"Suction, now!" I commanded the terrified surgical nurses.
My fingers desperately blindly searched through the slippery tissue until I felt the rapid, weak pulse of the severed artery.
I pinched the vessel shut with my bare fingers, stemming the catastrophic flow of blood through sheer physical force.
"Clamp it, clamp it right below my fingers!" I ordered the young resident, who finally snapped out of his frozen state.
The resident quickly secured the heavy metal clamp, and the terrible fountain of blood finally ceased.
Ethan's blood pressure slowly began to stabilize on the overhead monitor.
I turned around, fully intending to have hospital security arrest Dr. Harris for attempted murder.

But the operating room doors were swinging shut, and the surgical tray lay overturned on the floor.
Dr. Harris had slipped out during the chaos, completely vanishing into the maze of the massive hospital.
