Chapter 10 - The Morning Light

Despite the terrifying radio transmission, the FBI managed to track Dr. Harris down before he could leave the city limits.
They cornered him at a private airstrip just as he was attempting to board a chartered flight to South America.
He and his hired accomplices were arrested, indicted on multiple federal charges, and denied bail.
Six months later, the horrors of that rainy September night felt like a distant, terrible nightmare.
Ethan had undergone extensive physical therapy and was finally walking without the assistance of a cane.
He had been promoted to regional director for his bravery in exposing the massive corporate fraud ring.
We were standing in our sunlit kitchen, drinking coffee and laughing as we cooked breakfast together on a peaceful Sunday morning.
Our marriage had not only survived the ultimate test of trust, but it had grown stronger and deeper than I ever thought possible.
I kissed his cheek, feeling a profound, quiet gratitude for the happy ending we had fought so desperately to achieve.
After breakfast, I went into the guest bedroom to unpack the final cardboard box of Ethan's old office files.
At the very bottom of the box, hidden beneath a stack of old tax returns, I found a secret, locked leather folder.
I picked the small lock with a paperclip, assuming it was just more corporate evidence he had forgotten to submit.
Instead, I found an official, certified birth certificate for a three-year-old baby girl.

The mother listed on the document was Mia, and the father legally registered was Ethan Bennett.
Before I could even process the document, my cell phone rang from the nightstand, and when I answered, a tiny child's voice whispered, "Daddy?"
