Chapter 5 - The Operating Room

The heavy textbook collided with Mia's jaw, sending her crashing backward into a row of metal lockers.

The scalpel slipped from her grip and skittered uselessly across the floor.

I ripped the flash drive from the computer, shoved it deep into my scrub pocket, and ran out of the lounge.

I didn't have time to call the police or alert hospital security.

If Dr. Harris was the mastermind behind this massive fraud ring, Ethan was currently lying totally helpless on his operating table.

I sprinted down the sterile white corridors, ignoring the confused shouts of the nurses as I pushed past them.

I burst through the double doors of the surgical wing, swiping my security badge with trembling hands.

Instead of going to the scrub room, I ran straight up the back stairwell to the surgical viewing gallery.

Through the thick glass window, I could see Dr. Harris standing over Ethan's open, bleeding abdomen.

The other surgical residents were currently focused on setting the exposed bone in Ethan's mangled right leg.

Dr. Harris was alone at the head of the table, holding a sharp surgical clamp directly over a major, pulsating artery.

I slammed my fist against the gallery intercom button, flooding the operating room with my frantic voice.

"Step away from the table, Dr. Harris!" I screamed, pressing my hands against the cold glass.

The surgical team froze in absolute confusion, looking up at the gallery in shock.

Dr. Harris slowly raised his head, locking eyes with me through his protective surgical mask.

Even from this distance, I could see the cold, remorseless intention burning in his dark eyes.

He didn't step away from my husband.

Instead, he smiled directly at me, reached down into the surgical cavity, and deliberately sliced the primary artery in half.
