Chapter 6 - The Decoy

Nathan cautiously picked up the ringing cell phone from the luxurious leather seat.

"You always were incredibly predictable, Nathan," Victoria's arrogant voice echoed through the speaker.

"I knew you would break that pathetic maid out of jail and rush straight to the airport."

Nathan gripped the phone tight enough to crack the expensive screen.

"Where is my daughter, Victoria?"

Victoria laughed, a high and cruel sound that made Nathan's blood run cold.

"She is perfectly safe with me at the Cole corporate tower."

"I am currently standing in your father's old office, finalizing the adoption paperwork with a very generous judge."

Nathan realized the entire airport chase was a massive distraction to buy her time.

"Once the ink is dry, Lily becomes my legal heir," Victoria gloated.

"And when she tragically falls from the penthouse balcony later today, your entire family fortune becomes mine."

Nathan hung up the phone and ran back down the boarding stairs.

"She is at the corporate tower," Nathan told Grace as he jumped back into the driver's seat.

They sped back toward the heart of the city, weaving dangerously through morning traffic.

The massive glass skyscraper of the Cole empire loomed in the distance like a modern fortress.

Nathan knew the building was protected by a private security firm entirely loyal to Victoria.

They parked the stolen truck in a dark underground loading dock.

Nathan bypassed the biometric scanners using an old backdoor code he had built into the system years ago.

They sneaked into the heavy freight elevator and began the long ascent to the penthouse level.

Grace held Nathan's hand tightly, her eyes filled with terrifying desperation.

The elevator dinged softly as it reached the eightieth floor.

The heavy metal doors slowly slid open, revealing the luxurious executive suite.

But Victoria was not standing in the office signing paperwork.

She was standing by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, holding Lily entirely over the edge of the shattered glass.
