Chapter 4 - The Inmate

Nathan stared at the ruined flash drive, realizing Victoria had anticipated every single move.
She knew his father's attorney would eventually hand over the evidence.
She had intentionally hired hackers to plant a delayed wipe virus on the drive.
Nathan knew he could not fight this war from a compromised mansion.
He grabbed a hidden stack of emergency cash from his wall safe and stole a cheap car from his landscaping staff.
His first priority was getting Grace out of the county jail before Victoria's influence reached the guards.
He drove to the maximum-security facility under the cover of darkness.
Using a fake identity he had established during his rebellious college years, he managed to secure a visitor pass.
Grace was escorted into the visitation room wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit.
Her face was badly bruised, and she could barely walk without wincing in pain.
"They put me in a cell with a woman who claimed she was hired by Victoria," Grace whispered through the glass.
Nathan pressed his hand against the thick reinforced barrier.
"I am going to get you out of here, I promise."
Grace shook her head, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
"You have to save Lily first, Nathan."
"Victoria told me she is going to take Lily out of the country on a private jet tomorrow morning."
Nathan felt his heart pound aggressively against his ribs.
"I won't let her take our daughter."
"There is something else you need to know about your father," Grace confessed softly.
She looked nervously at the security cameras mounted on the ceiling.
"Your father didn't force me to run away because he hated me."
"He forced me to run away because he discovered Victoria was planning to assassinate Lily."
Nathan realized his father had died trying to protect the grandchild he secretly loved.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door to the visitation room slammed open.

The corrupt attorney who had given Nathan the envelope earlier that evening walked into the room.
The man smiled warmly at Nathan before pulling a suppressed pistol from his jacket.
