Chapter 6 - The Devil's Bargain

Leo immediately pulled a heavily encrypted satellite phone from his tactical vest.

He dialed Marcus Falcone’s direct number, holding the phone out so I could speak.

“I have the real ledger, Marcus,” I said, trying to keep my voice from shaking.

Silence hung on the line for a terrifying moment before Marcus started laughing.

“The little maid wants to play gangster,” Marcus mocked cruelly.

“If you ever want to see this drive, you will bring Vincent to the abandoned steel mill on the docks in one hour,” I demanded.

I hung up the phone before he could argue and handed it back to Leo.

“You are a very brave woman, Clara, but this is a suicide mission,” Leo warned me.

Leo handed me a small, loaded pistol and showed me how to click off the safety.

He drove us to the docks in a stolen car, hiding Mia safely in the reinforced trunk with a blanket and a tablet to keep her quiet.

The steel mill was a decaying, rusted nightmare illuminated by harsh yellow floodlights.

I walked through the massive metal doors entirely alone, holding the silver drive up in the air.

Marcus stood on a raised metal platform, surrounded by twenty heavily armed guards.

He snapped his fingers, and two men dragged Vincent forward.

My boss was beaten so badly his face was entirely unrecognizable, and his expensive suit was soaked in dark blood.

They threw Vincent brutally off the edge of the platform, letting him crash onto the hard concrete floor near my feet.

“I brought your boss, now throw the drive up here,” Marcus demanded eagerly.

I knelt down to help Vincent, but he violently pushed me away.

“Clara, run!” Vincent gasped, spitting blood onto the floor.

“Leo is the one who sold out my security codes to Marcus, not Renzo!”
