Chapter 4 - The Ultimate Price

The smoke from the explosion cleared, revealing a dozen heavily armed men stepping out of the trucks.

At the center of the group stood Marcus Falcone, the ruthless leader of the rival syndicate.

He held a massive rocket launcher resting casually on his expensive suit shoulder.

“You ran out of places to hide, Vincent,” Marcus laughed cruelly.

Vincent pushed me and Mia behind a concrete support pillar.

“The SUV armor cannot withstand a direct hit from that rocket,” Vincent whispered to me.

He checked the magazine of his pistol and realized he only had four bullets left.

“I am going to surrender to buy you time,” he said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it.

“No, they will kill you!” I cried, grabbing the sleeve of his torn jacket.

He looked down at Mia, who was finally breathing normally again.

“I have done a lot of evil things in my life, Clara,” he said sadly.

“Saving an innocent mother and child might be the only good thing I ever leave behind.”

He stepped out from behind the pillar with his hands raised high in the air.

“Let the woman and the child walk away, Marcus, and the ledger is yours,” Vincent shouted across the garage.

Marcus smiled wickedly and signaled his men to lower their weapons.

Two massive thugs grabbed Vincent, kicking his legs out from under him and tying his hands with thick zip-ties.

Marcus walked up and violently struck Vincent across the face with the heavy barrel of his gun.

“I accept your surrender, old friend,” Marcus sneered.

Marcus turned around and looked directly at the concrete pillar hiding me.

“But I never leave witnesses behind.”

Marcus ordered his men to pour gasoline all over the floor surrounding our hiding spot.
