Chapter 1 - The Silver Drive
He looked at Mia.
She looked at him.
The entire room seemed to hold its collective breath in pure terror.
Vincent Castalano’s terrifying scowl slowly began to crack at the edges.
The corner of his mouth twitched upward uncontrollably.
Then, a deep, rumbling chuckle escaped his broad chest.
It was a sound that nobody in the criminal underworld had ever heard before.
The two security guards near the fireplace exchanged bewildered glances.
Vincent reached out and gently tapped my daughter on the tip of her nose.
“You have a very fierce face, little one,” Vincent said in a surprisingly soft voice.
Mia giggled and dropped her angry expression instantly.
“I found a shiny toy on your floor,” she announced proudly.
She opened her tiny fist to reveal a small, encrypted silver flash drive.
My heart completely stopped in my chest.
That drive contained the master ledger for the entire Castalano syndicate.
Vincent’s smile vanished instantly as he realized what she was holding.
He reached out his hand slowly so he would not frighten her.
“Can I have that back, sweetheart?” he asked calmly.
Before Mia could hand it over, the metallic click of a gun hammer echoed through the quiet study.
I gasped and spun around to see Renzo Moretti.
