Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Trap

Vincent did not even flinch at the sight of the weapon aimed at his skull.
He slowly positioned his body between the gun and my daughter.
“You are making a fatal mistake, Renzo,” Vincent warned in a dangerously low tone.
Renzo sneered and adjusted his grip on the heavy pistol.
“The Falcone family offered me ten million dollars and my own territory for that ledger,” Renzo replied.
The two security guards by the fireplace suddenly drew their weapons as well.
Instead of aiming at the traitor, they pointed their guns straight at me.
They were all in on the betrayal.
Without warning, Vincent kicked the heavy oak desk forward with impossible strength.
The massive piece of furniture slammed into Renzo, throwing off his aim as he fired.
The bullet shattered the expensive window behind us.
“Get down!” Vincent roared, grabbing me by the waist and pulling me behind the overturned desk.
He snatched Mia from the floor and tucked her safely under his broad chest.
Bullets tore into the wood above our heads, sending sharp splinters raining down on us.
Vincent frantically punched a hidden code into a keypad beneath the floorboards.
A square section of the expensive rug suddenly dropped downward, revealing a dark escape chute.
“Jump in, now!” he commanded, pushing me toward the dark hole.
I grabbed Mia tightly in my arms and slid down the smooth metal chute into total darkness.
Vincent dropped in right behind us just as a grenade exploded in the study above.
The heavy steel hatch snapped shut above us, locking us safely inside the reinforced panic room.
I sat in the pitch black, shaking uncontrollably as I hugged my crying child.

Then, I heard a terrible hissing sound coming from the ceiling vents.
“They cut the communications and started pumping carbon monoxide into the ventilation,” Vincent coughed, struggling to breathe.
