Chapter 3 - The Dead End

My lungs began to burn as the invisible, deadly gas flooded the small panic room.

I ripped a piece of fabric from my apron and pressed it firmly over Mia’s mouth and nose.

“We are going to suffocate in here,” I cried out in the darkness.

Vincent turned on a small emergency flashlight, revealing the concrete walls around us.

“There is a manual override for the blast door, but the power lines were severed in the explosion,” he explained rapidly.

He pulled a combat knife from his ankle holster and began prying open a heavy metal panel on the wall.

His hands were bleeding, but he did not stop working.

“Hold the light steady on these wires,” he ordered me.

I held the flashlight with trembling hands while he ripped thick electrical cables out of the wall.

My vision started to blur at the edges as the poison gas took its toll.

Mia’s head slumped heavily against my shoulder, her eyes rolling back into her head.

“Vincent, please hurry!” I screamed in absolute panic.

He grabbed two exposed wires and jammed them forcefully together.

A massive shower of blue sparks erupted, burning his forearms, but a loud mechanical clunk echoed through the room.

The heavy blast door slowly ground open, revealing a hidden stairwell leading downward.

Vincent scooped Mia into his arms and grabbed my hand, pulling me into the fresh, cool air of the tunnel.

We sprinted down the concrete steps for what felt like miles.

We finally reached a steel door that opened directly into the estate’s underground parking garage.

Vincent ran toward a heavily armored black SUV parked in the corner.

Before we could reach the vehicle, the main garage doors violently exploded inward.

Two armored trucks sped into the garage, completely blocking our only exit.
