Chapter 8 - The Sanctuary

Killeran stared in absolute disbelief at the elderly nun holding a heavy tactical shotgun.

Sister Agnes smiled warmly and kindly offered them dry towels and hot tea.

Mave explained that the church was a highly secret sanctuary for retired underworld families.

Sister Agnes used to be the most feared smuggler on the East Coast before completely taking her vows.

They dried off quickly in the warm rectory and finally caught their heavy breath.

Killeran looked at Mave closely, truly seeing her incredible strength for the very first time.

He gently took her injured hand and thanked her deeply for saving his life.

Mave blushed slightly and admitted she had cared for him silently for a very long time.

Their quiet romantic moment was brutally interrupted by the loud sound of shattering stained glass.

Silas and his rogue tactical team had tracked their wet footprints directly through the snow.

Heavy combat boots echoed loudly and menacingly against the marble floors of the church.

Sister Agnes calmly pumped her shotgun and stood bravely right in the center aisle.

Killeran and Mave hid quickly behind the massive wooden pews with their weapons drawn.

Silas walked arrogantly up to the altar with a wicked, deeply cruel smirk on his face.

He loudly demanded that they hand over the master ledger and surrender peacefully.

He promised falsely to let the nun and the brother live if they complied immediately.

Killeran yelled from the dark shadows that he would never negotiate with a filthy traitor.

Silas laughed cruelly and signaled his heavily armed men to completely open fire.

The beautiful interior of the church was instantly shredded by brutal automatic crossfire.

Wooden splinters and shattered colored glass rained down heavily like deadly confetti.

Killeran fired precise, deadly shots, entirely taking down three agents in rapid succession.

Mave moved with lethal grace, brilliantly eliminating two more enemies flanking the altar.

Sister Agnes provided heavy covering fire, her massive shotgun roaring loudly like a cannon.

Silas realized quickly he was losing the gunfight and pulled a hidden detonator from his pocket.

He screamed violently that he had wired the church's gas lines with high explosives.

He pressed the red button, and a deafening click echoed entirely through the silent sanctuary.

Absolutely nothing happened.
