Chapter 18 - The Mother's Sins

The smoke from the firefight still clung to Vincent’s clothes as they kicked open the doors of the medical facility.
The nursing home was completely deserted, the staff having been bribed or terrified into leaving hours ago.
Vincent and Harper walked down the sterile white hallway, their weapons drawn and ready.
They reached Evelyn’s private suite and found the door wide open, waiting for them.
Evelyn was standing in the center of the room, holding a silver revolver casually by her side.
She looked at her daughter with a mask of absolute disdain, furious that her perfect plan had failed.
She called Harper a pathetic disappointment for choosing a street thug over her own flesh and blood.
Harper did not flinch, nor did she shed a single tear for the woman who had manipulated her entire existence.
She told her mother that Vincent had shown her more loyalty in one week than Evelyn had in twenty years.
Evelyn sneered and suddenly raised her silver revolver, aiming it directly at Vincent’s chest.
Before Vincent could raise his own weapon, Harper stepped directly into the line of fire.
She raised her compact pistol and aimed it squarely at her mother's heart.
The room fell into a terrifying, breathless silence as the two women stared each other down.
Evelyn laughed cruelly, stating that Harper was far too weak and cowardly to ever pull the trigger.
Harper stared into her mother’s cold, empty eyes and realized the woman was absolutely right.
May you like
She was not a murderer.
Instead of shooting her mother, Harper shifted her aim slightly and fired a single bullet into Evelyn’s kneecap.
