Chapter 16 - The Decoy

Vincent did not wait for the blinded mercenaries to adjust their eyes to the sudden light.

He gave a single, sharp whistle that echoed through the empty courtyards.

A devastating hail of gunfire erupted from the rooftops, the balconies, and the tree lines simultaneously.

Evelyn’s elite assassins were cut down before they could even raise their automatic weapons.

Harper watched the chaotic slaughter from a reinforced window in the second-story panic room.

She clutched the cold metal of her pistol, praying that Vincent would survive the brutal crossfire.

The initial wave of mercenaries was annihilated, but a second heavily armored vehicle smashed through the courtyard wall.

Three men wearing heavy ballistic armor stepped out, carrying military-grade explosive charges.

They were heading straight for the load-bearing pillars of the main mansion to bring the roof down.

Vincent was pinned behind a marble fountain by suppressing fire and could not reach them in time.

Harper realized instantly that if those charges were planted, everyone inside the house would be buried alive.

She did not think about the consequences; she only thought about saving the man who had protected her.

Harper kicked open the side door of the panic room and slipped onto the dark balcony directly above the bombers.

She raised her trembling hands, aimed the compact pistol at the explosives bag, and squeezed the trigger.

The bullet missed the men but struck the volatile detonators packed tightly inside the canvas bag.

A massive, deafening explosion ripped through the courtyard, throwing the armored men into the air.

Vincent looked up at the balcony, completely stunned to see the waitress holding a smoking gun.

Harper gave him a fierce, determined nod, officially crossing the line into his violent world.
