Chapter 14 - The Midnight Confession

The grandfather clock in the estate library struck midnight with a heavy, ominous chime.
Harper collapsed into the leather armchair and sobbed, handing the vial of poison directly to Vincent.
She confessed absolutely everything, leaving no dark secret or terrifying detail behind.
She told him about the text message on Marcano’s phone, the fake dementia, and her mother's true identity.
Vincent listened in absolute, terrifying silence, his gray eyes darkening with lethal calculation.
He did not look betrayed or angry at Harper; he looked utterly fascinated by the complexity of the trap.
He took the vial of poison, examined it under the lamplight, and carefully poured it into a potted plant.
The lush green leaves withered and turned black within seconds, proving the deadly nature of the liquid.
Vincent knelt in front of Harper, wiping the tears from her pale cheeks with his thumbs.
He told her she was the bravest woman he had ever met for defying a direct order from the shadows.
He explained that Evelyn’s plan was brilliant, but her fatal mistake was underestimating Harper’s loyalty.
Vincent stood up and walked over to his massive oak desk, pulling out a detailed blueprint of the city.
He declared that they were not going to run, and they were not going to hide.
They were going to use Evelyn’s absolute arrogance against her to destroy her secret syndicate.
Harper wiped her eyes, a sudden, fierce spark of defiance igniting in her chest.
She asked Vincent exactly what he needed her to do to end this war permanently.

Vincent smiled a dangerous, predatory smile that sent a shiver down her spine.
He told her she was going to call her mother and tell her the kingpin was dead.
