Chapter 8 - The Desperate Drive

Bullets rained down into the dark water, splashing violently just inches away from where they were hiding.

Declan held Sadie perfectly still against a barnacle-covered wooden piling, waiting for the gunfire to finally cease.

Marcus’s men eventually assumed they had drowned and ran off to search the perimeter of the docks.

Declan dragged Sadie through the freezing water until they reached a muddy embankment entirely hidden by tall reeds.

They crawled out of the bay, both of them shivering violently in the bitter night air.

Declan staggered forward, a sudden grimace of intense pain crossing his normally stoic face.

Sadie noticed a dark, terrifying stain of fresh blood rapidly expanding across the side of his white shirt.

One of the blind shots fired by Marcus’s men had caught Declan right below his ribs.

He collapsed onto the muddy grass, his breathing shallow and dangerously ragged.

Sadie refused to let him die, dragging his heavy body toward a stolen maintenance truck parked near the fence.

She shoved him into the passenger seat and climbed behind the steering wheel, her broken arm screaming in agony.

She hotwired the old ignition exactly the way her father had taught her when she was a teenager.

The engine sputtered to life, and she tore away from the shipyard without turning on the headlights.

Declan coughed up blood and gave her quiet directions to a secret underground clinic run by a neutral mob doctor.

Sadie drove like a maniac, running red lights and swerving through the empty city streets.

They crashed through the back alley gates of the clinic, and Sadie dragged Declan inside the sterile building.

An older doctor in a white coat rushed forward, helping hoist Declan onto a stainless steel operating table.

Sadie leaned against the wall, completely exhausted, while the doctor prepared a syringe of clear liquid.

But as Sadie looked closer, she noticed a distinct, fresh tattoo of a black serpent on the doctor’s wrist.

It was the exact same gang symbol Marcus’s mercenaries wore on their uniforms.

Sadie realized the clinic was no longer neutral, and this doctor was preparing to administer a lethal injection.

She pulled her silver pistol and pressed the cold barrel directly against the back of the traitorous doctor's skull.
