Chapter 8 - The Hidden Ledger

Silas Thorne stared at the small, encrypted flash drive in Kayla's trembling hand. The silence in the warehouse was deafening, broken only by the distant sound of rain pounding against the metal roof.
"You're bluffing," Jacqueline spat, her sniper rifle still aimed generally at the group. "She's a maid. She wouldn't know a ledger from a grocery list."
"Try me," Kayla challenged, her voice surprisingly firm. "It details every payoff, every hidden account, and every politician Victor has in his pocket. It's the key to dismantling his operation before he even consolidates power."
Gunther looked at Kayla, a flicker of genuine respect crossing his usually impassive face. She was quick, resourceful, and far more dangerous than he had initially realized.
Silas considered the offer, his greedy eyes fixed on the flash drive. "If that's true," he said slowly, "it's worth more than the port expansion. But how do I know you're not playing me?"
"You don't," Gunther interjected, stepping between Kayla and Silas. "But you know me, Silas. I don't bluff."
Silas finally nodded, gesturing to his men to lower their weapons. "Alright. The girl stays. But I want that drive decrypted immediately."
Gunther agreed, and they moved deeper into the warehouse to a secure computer terminal. Kayla, hands still shaking slightly, plugged the drive in and began typing in a complex series of passwords.
"Where did you learn to do that?" Gunther asked quietly as she worked.

"My brother," Kayla replied, not looking up from the screen. "He's a hacker. Or, he was, before his accident. He taught me a few things."
As the progress bar on the screen inched forward, the heavy steel doors of the warehouse shuddered under a massive impact. Victor had found them, and he had brought an army.
