Chapter 7 - The Third Player

The warehouse erupted into a Mexican standoff. Gunther, Jacqueline, and the unknown tactical team all had their weapons raised, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.

"Lower your weapons," a voice commanded from behind the tactical team.

A man in a sharp, tailored suit stepped forward. Gunther recognized him immediately. It was Silas Thorne, a ruthless rival boss who controlled the city's underground gambling ring.

"Silas," Gunther said, his voice dangerously calm. "What are you doing here?"

"I heard there was a changing of the guard in the Woods syndicate," Silas replied with a smirk. "I thought I'd offer my assistance... for a price, of course."

Silas glanced at Jacqueline, then at Kayla, who was still clutching the jacket tightly around her.

"It seems you have a mess on your hands, Gunther," Silas continued. "Victor is tearing the city apart looking for you. I can offer you sanctuary, resources, and the men you need to take back your throne."

"And in return?" Gunther asked, his eyes narrowing.

"In return, I want the port expansion project," Silas demanded, naming the most lucrative operation in Gunther's empire.

Gunther knew Silas was a snake, but he was currently out of options. He slowly lowered his weapon. "Deal."

Silas smiled, but the smile didn't reach his eyes. "Excellent. Now, hand over the girl."

Gunther froze. "The maid stays with me."

Silas's men raised their weapons slightly. "I insist, Gunther. She's a liability, and I don't harbor liabilities."

Before Gunther could react, Kayla stood up, a strange, calm resolve settling over her. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive.

"I think you'll want to see this first, Mr. Thorne," she said, her voice steady. "It's Victor's complete operational ledger. I found it in Mr. Woods's study before I fell asleep."
