Chapter 5 - The Safehouse

Gunther swerved sharply, exiting the highway and plunging into the labyrinthine streets of the city's industrial district. He drove erratically, trying to shake the tail, but the headlights remained fixed in his rearview mirror.
He realized the tracker must be embedded in his phone. He rolled down the window and hurled the expensive device into the night.
They drove for another hour, ensuring they were finally alone, before Gunther pulled up to a nondescript, abandoned warehouse on the edge of the docks.
"Inside," he ordered Kayla, ushering her through a rusted side door.
The warehouse was a fully stocked safehouse, complete with weapons, cash, and medical supplies. Gunther immediately began assessing their situation. His empire was compromised, his right-hand man was a traitor, and his only ally was a terrified maid.
Kayla sat on a crate, shivering in her thin uniform. "Why did you bring me?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"Because you saved my life," Gunther replied, his eyes scanning a map of the city. "And because Victor will kill anyone associated with me. You're a liability to him now."
He tossed her a thick jacket from the supplies. "Get some rest. Tomorrow, we start taking back my city."
May you like
Kayla wrapped the jacket around herself, feeling a strange mix of fear and bizarre comfort. But as she closed her eyes, a sharp, metallic click echoed through the warehouse.
Gunther spun around, his weapon drawn. Standing in the shadows was a woman with a sniper rifle aimed directly at Kayla's head. It was Jacqueline, the girlfriend Gunther had dismissed hours earlier.
