Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Gunther stared into the blinding light, his mind racing. Victor, the man who had stood beside him through countless wars, was orchestrating his downfall.

"Why, Victor?" Gunther asked, his voice chillingly calm.

"The union delegates," Victor replied, his voice laced with bitterness. "They offered me a larger cut if I removed you. You're too rigid, Gunther. The city needs new management."

Victor aimed the rifle at Gunther's chest. "It's nothing personal, just business."

Kayla, still holding the SIG Sauer, squeezed her eyes shut and pulled the trigger.

The gunshot was deafening in the quiet night. She missed Victor completely, but the bullet shattered the spotlight, plunging the garden back into darkness.

"Run!" Gunther roared, grabbing Kayla's hand and dragging her toward the dense woods bordering the estate.

They sprinted through the trees, the sounds of shouting and gunfire echoing behind them. Gunther knew the woods intimately, navigating the treacherous terrain with practiced ease.

They reached a hidden access road where Gunther had stashed a secondary getaway vehicle months ago. He hotwired the old, unmarked sedan, and they tore down the dirt road, leaving the estate behind.

As they merged onto the main highway, Gunther checked the rearview mirror. A pair of headlights was rapidly closing the distance, and the chilling realization hit him—Victor had placed a tracker on him.
